Automatic Login to Windows Vista

Normally, Windows Vista will automatically login if there is only one user account on the PC, and that account does not have a password set. However, it is possible to have Windows Vista auto login to a selected account, even if it has a password set.

The auto login feature is convenient, but not entirely secure. Once the computer is configured for automatic login, anyone that can gain physical access to the computer can also gain access to everything that is in the computer, including any  network that the computer is connected to.

To set Windows Vista to auto logon, follow procedure below.

  1. Click on Vista Orb Start button.
  2. Type netplwiz into the Instant Search box, and press Enter.
  3. If User Access Control window pops up to ask for permission, click “Continue”.
  4. At the User Accounts window, uncheck and clear the “Users must enter a username and password to use this computer.” option, and click OK.

  5. In the Automatically Log On window, input the user ID and password for the user account that you want Vista to automatically login to when starting up. Click OK when done.

  6. Restart computer.
